Cluid Housing Association and The Emerald Co-Operative in partnership with Ballymun Regeneration Ltd started on site with the Emerald Eco Project, Ballymun on the 7th September last. The Emerald Project is a social & affordable scheme of 37 dwellings and a Communal Facility designed as truly sustainably housing development. The Project when completed will be one of the most energy efficient housing developments in Ireland.
This project is envisaged as defining the leading edge of sustainable building in Ireland and will be the flagship green project of the Ballymun regeneration initiative mix of social and affordable housing, designed to the highest ecological standards (Low energy, zero Carbon emissions, natural materials, sustainable construction techniques).
The scheme comprises the construction of 37 no. sustainably designed apartments/houses over 2,3 and 4 storeys in 4 separate blocks around a courtyard, including a community room/visitor centre and a 3-level demonstration of living machine and water recovery system.
New technologies within the scope of the project include:
Rainwater harvesting, grey water treatment and recycling, passive ventilation with passive heat recovery windows, PV arrays for generating electricity, Solar thermal panels, BMS including end user displays of energy usage, Biomass boiler with district heating, sheepswool insulation, Brettstaple flooring, Green roofs, and a composter.
